The Headline - The origins of sliced bread and the famous phrase "the greatest thing since sliced bread."

When we say something is "the greatest thing since sliced bread," we are referring to a great innovation or development. This saying comes from an advertisement which appeared in 1928 when sliced bread was first brought to stores. The advertisement stated sliced bread was "the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped."

At the time, most families were purchasing their bread from a store (rather than baking it at home). But the bread sold in stores was soft, which made it hard to slice. The Invention It was Otto Rohwedder of Iowa who invented and patented the first bread-slicing and bread-wrapping machine. According to the patent, the slicing machine pushes bread through a series of "endless cutting bands" and towards a second machine which wraps the bread in plastic.

Bakers worried that sliced bread would go stale too quickly, so it took years for Otto to convince a someone to try his invention. The first baker to try the slicing machine was Frank Bench, owner of the Chillicothe Baking Company in Chillicothe, Missouri. Bench's bravery paid off. In fact, the results were life changing. His company saw a sales increase of 2,000%.

Sliced bread soon traveled to towns across the country. To this day, Chillicothe is still known as the place "where innovation is born."
